Nigeria E-Invoicing Deadlines: Who Must Comply and When
Nigeria's e-invoicing regime is being introduced in phases by taxpayer size. Knowing which phase your business falls into, and when enforcement begins, is the difference between a calm transition and a last-minute scramble. Here is how the published rollout is structured.
A phased rollout by taxpayer size
Rather than switching every business on at once, the NRS has staggered the mandate by annual turnover. Large taxpayers went first, followed by medium-sized businesses, with smaller businesses later. This gives each group time to onboard before enforcement.
Large taxpayers
Businesses with turnover above the large-taxpayer threshold were the first group required to issue validated invoices. Their onboarding and go-live ran first, and the NRS began monitoring compliance for this group, with enforcement for those who had not started compliant transmission.
If your business is in this group and is not yet live, treat it as urgent: enforcement applies to this phase first.
Medium and smaller taxpayers
Medium-sized taxpayers follow, with their own go-live and a later review and enforcement window. Smaller and emerging taxpayers are scheduled last, with full nationwide coverage targeted for a later date.
Published timelines are guidelines and have moved before, so the safe approach is to prepare ahead of your phase rather than waiting for the exact date.
The legal backing
The regime sits on Nigeria's tax administration legislation, which provides for penalties for non-compliance. The point is simple: once your phase is live, an unvalidated invoice is not a compliant invoice.
How to prepare before your deadline
Confirm your turnover band and likely phase. Check whether your current invoicing or ERP system can connect to the NRS platform through an approved provider. Run tests in the sandbox environment before go-live so validation errors are found early, not in front of a customer.
- Confirm which phase your turnover places you in.
- Check your invoicing/ERP software's integration path.
- Clean up customer, product and tax data before you connect.
- Test in the sandbox before issuing live validated invoices.
